It's Festival Time!

In our household, the month of October has humorously become
known as "The Festival." I introduced this tradition several years
back as an attempt for some equality with the ladies in the family.
You see, my wife, oldest daughter and mother all have birthdays
in February. Throw in Valentine's Day and you understand why I typically
just sign my paycheck over to the local florist at the beginning
of the month. Halloween (one of my favorite holidays) and my birthday
fall at the end of October, so I joked that the guys in our family
deserve their very own month as well...and flying solo as the only
male in the house, this month should be all about ME!
...
In theory, the month of October is supposed to go sort of like this.
I get first pick of the hamburgers off the grill. I get full control
of the TV remote...and absolutely NO biographies. "Are you kidding,
you want me to clean out the dishwasher? It's October, remember...festival
time!" "Sure, I'll take out the trash - after my nap!"
...
Now, I'm sure that most of you think this idea sounds great. But,
because I'm totally outnumbered by the fairer sex in our house,
I had a real hard time convincing the ladies about the merits of
the concept. At best, "The Festival" was merely good for a chuckle
while sitting around the dinner table...UNTIL NOW!
...
With the club's Milford Demonstration Day at Plains Park becoming
a regular thing (thank you Brad, Scott and Bill) and our Annual
Club Banquet taking place at the end of October, my "festival" concept
is starting to have some real significance. It gives me a legitimate
reason to be all about model aircraft for days on end. Now that
The Collings Foundation is doing an autumn open house in addition
to the one in the spring, the only thing better would be the Rhinebeck
Jamboree taking place in the middle of the month!
...
Seriously though, the month of October is a pretty special time
of year for the club. As we all take advantage of the last few warm
days to refine that new maneuver we learned in July, we're also
given the opportunity to connect with other club members that we
may not have seen since Winter Projects Night in April. It allows
us to show off a little and hopefully attract some new members to
MMAC for next year. It's also a time to celebrate the year's experiences
with our family and friends.
...
So a "Happy Festival" to everyone, and let's wish for as many warm
autumn afternoons as Mother Nature can provide! Now, where's
that remote?
Keep
up your airspeed!

There was much discussion on the upcoming Milford Demonstration

2007 Milford Demonstration Day a Success!
 |
|
Although it got off to a wet start, most
everyone was all smiles by the end of the event.
|
By Jim McCoy
It's true...the weather was far from the picture-perfect fall day
we had last year, but the 2007 edition of the MMAC Demonstration
Day at Plains Park in Milford was no less successful.
...
When members starting arriving around 7:30AM to begin set-up,
the skies were overcast but there was no rain and the wind was quite
calm. This changed rapidly over the next hour or so as the American
flag on the other side of the runway began whipping wildly and a
damp, cold mist began to settle over the field. All weather reports
indicated that things should improve over the course of the morning,
so we all kept the faith and were rewarded by the worst being over
by 9:30. Conditions gradually got better to the point that the wind
was practically nonexistent by noon and the sun peeked out by 1:30.
...
Even with the questionable weather early in the day, we
were very pleasantly surprised by the large number of interested
folks who came out to see some flying. Families and individuals
of all ages were excited to see the large array of models we had
assembled along the flightline. I personally had several conversations
with spectators who wanted to ask questions of all sorts. Many mentioned
that they had had attended last year's event and had been looking
forward to seeing our models once again.
...
Other than open flying offered to members and guests, we
offered up John Holcomb's swing-dance flying routine and a highly
competitive tethered balloon bust event that had John, Bill Lloyd
and Mike Mauricio battling to an exciting three-way tie. Brad Kaye
and his daughter, Jade, orchestrated the ever-popular "flying lawnmower"
routine while Scott Annis handled the PA system.
...
Several members and guest pilots showed off a little by
performing aerobatic routines with both fixed-wing craft as well
as helicopters. The extreme example was guest Shane Breadlove (from
Wrentham's Lazy Loopers club) performing crowd-pleasing 3D maneuvers
with his 48% gas-powered Edge...complete with tons of smoke and
lots of hovering.
...
At noontime, we switched gears to offer the audience a chance
to take the sticks themselves. After a short "ground school" session,
people who wanted to give it a try were treated to buddy-box time
provided by John Holcomb and Bill Lloyd assisted by several MMAC
members. Students ranged from 7 to 70 with several women stepping
up to the flightline as well. Although both John and Bill looked
exhausted after the training sessions, they both spoke very positively
about the experience.
...
Thanks to Bob Rice at Hobby USA in Ashland, Joe Candela
at Mendon's Creative Hobbies and Andy Argenio at Brands of North
Providence...we were well stocked with tons of raffle prizes for
both the audience and club members alike. Bill Lloyd was the lucky
winner of the pilot's raffle, earning him a 40-sized Corsair ARF
which he was very happy top squeeze into his car for the ride home
along with all the equipment he brought for the day. The 50-50 raffle
netted over $100 with the club's proceeds going to the Milford Youth
Center.
...
A special "tip of the wing" goes to Scott Annis, Brad Kaye
and Bill O'Donnell and their families for their time and effort
putting together the day's program...especially for making sure
that the raffle and radio impound ran smoothly. Thanks also to John
Holcomb and Bill Lloyd for offering their planes and thumbs for
the flight training as well as Mickey Callahan, Charles Anamateros
and others for helping out. Bill Costello once again served as event
CD...thanks, Bill!
...
So, although the day got off to a questionable start, the
event itself accomplished exactly what we intended...offering the
community a chance to see what our hobby is all about and giving
us the chance to have some fun in the process.
|
|
 |
|
Bill O'Donnell, Scott Annis and Brad Kaye
(not pictured) worked for several weeks prior to the event
to be sure that everything ran smoothly.
|
Bill Costello (event CD) was on hand to be
sure we covered the bases. He even got in a few flights!.
|
|
|
|
|
It was a day for families
and old friends...as former MMAC member Mike Mauricio and
his son were on hand to enjoy a day of flying.
|
No shortage of models to admire...ranging
from small to large, electric to gassers, sport to scale. Something
for everyone! |
|
|
|
| Scott Annis handled the announcements throughout
the day. Here he describes Shane Breadlove's maneuvers while
Brad Kaye, event co-organizer, looks on. |

|
| The raffle area and radio
impound kept busy throughout the day. Our hobby shop supporters
were very generous this year. |
Yours truly gives a brief
ground school lesson to a young RC pilot before turning her
over to Bill or John for buddy box time. |
|
|
| This says it all! Instructor
John Holcomb keeps a watchful eye on the club's trainer as a
young student takes his first flight with MMAC member Charles
Anamateros on hand to assist. It looks like dad is having a
great time as well. |
