Time to Turn the Page...

Lots of members continue to fly on through the winter months, strapping skis or floats onto their models and braving the cold and snow. I guess I must have either thin skin or thin blood, because once November rolls around and the temperature consistently dips below forty degrees, I find it pretty difficult to tolerate being outside.
...
This does not mean that I abandon the hobby for the winter months. On the contrary, I enjoy building and repairing almost as much as I enjoy a warm summer's day at Bill Martin Airfield. I get a real sense of satisfaction from spending all Saturday working in the shop...either tinkering on some new project or perhaps just fitting a replacement set of landing gear to one of my older models.
...
So, the MMAC Annual Banquet typically signals a kind of turning point for me...switching for summer mode to winter mode...and this year is no exception.
...
We thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality provided by Michelle and the staff at The Coachmen's Lodge, and the food, drink and conversation was as lively as ever. After some club business was conducted, we took a few moments to acknowledge Scott Annis, Brad Kaye and Bill O'Donnell for their efforts organizing and running the very successful Demonstration Day at Milford's Plains Park in early October. We also made a point to thank John Holcomb and Bill Lloyd for their time (and fuel) doing the buddy-box training at the same event. Bill Lloyd and Bill Costello were singled-out for their Contest Director duty at the two enjoyable club fun-flys held in June and August.
...
The "official" part of the evening was ended by thanking Bill O'Donnell, Dave Seale and Roger Gilman for their time and dedication over the past season as members of the executive board (see related article below). It truly has been a pleasure to serve with these gentlemen in 2007...as well as several seasons previous. I have to say that my years on the MMAC executive board has given me so much opportunity to learn and grow as well as the chance to work with some of the nicest and most consistently positive energy individuals I've ever met. I feel honored to have been given the chance to serve the club in this way.
...
As we close the book on another successful season, let's all look forward to afternoons in the shop or days flying off a runway covered with snow...either way, we'll be having fun doing what we all enjoy.

Keep up your airspeed!
Jim McCoy

Announcing the 2008 Executive Board

The MMAC Executive Board was announced at the banquet on October 28. After two years as vice-president (keeper of the gate keys and the club raffle-master), Bill O'Donnell is moving to the president's role for next season. This will be Dave Seale's 5th year as treasurer. Dave is truly a detail guy so there's never a doubt about the books being in order. Roger Gilman will be serving his third year as club secretary. The backbone of the club, Roger handles all membership duties as well as coordinating correspondence with the AMA and the Commonwealth regarding insurance, our charter and field permits.
... It was a real treat this year to have two members interested in the same office. Thanks to both Mickey Callahan and Brad Kaye for stepping up and being willing to take on the job of vice-president. Thanks also to all club members who participated in the election by returning their ballot postcards. Although it was a close race, Brad Kaye of Milford came out on top and will serve as MMAC vice-president for 2008.

... Please remember that the Executive Board works hard all year to keep the club running smoothly and provide a safe and pleasant for all of us to fly. Any and all help or input is always welcome, so feel free to contact them with suggestions or comments. Their phone and email can be found via the "contacts" link on the club website.

The turf at Bill Martin has suffered a late-season grub attack. So just be aware that the loose grass at either end of the runway is the work of Mother Nature and not some teenage vandal. We will attend to repairing the grass in the springtime.
... MMAC member Dave OHanian has been cleaning off his workbench of late, test-flying two new models at the field. The first is a 40-sized Balsa USA Phaeton bipe that has an older .60 two-stroke strapped into the nose. Although early attempts were hindered by a fussy engine, Dave worked through the problems and was able to successfully fly the little biplane.
... Dave also showed up recently with a new Great Planes Ryan STA ARF. This beauty was assembled with the same care and attention to detail that Dave bestows onto his kit-builds, so you know it looks like a million bucks. Bill Lloyd had the pleasure of doing the initial flight tests, and the plane flew wonderfully.

Right before Halloween, Bill Costello (right) had the pleasure of greeting the lesser-known fifth member of the rock band KISS who stopped in for a visit to Bill Martin Field.
