Winter
Projects!

A couple of interesting thoughts come to mind about our latest Winter Project event held on April 25. As always, it was both exciting and satisfying to see the handiwork of so many talented and dedicated modelers all lined up on the tables at the American Legion. The planes themselves were as varied and individual as the guys that brought them and I'm sure that even a non-modeler would easily recognize the amount of time, hard work and pure love of the hobby that went into each and every entry. Attendance this year was excellent as we filled up most of the available table space...14 planes in all.

Lots of models of all kinds and lots of good conversation made for a nice evening.

... What struck me was that there were as many members attending without a plane as with one. In other words, lots of guys came that evening to simply enjoy the experience and to support the efforts of their fellow modelers - a very cool thing and something that we should be proud of as an organization.
...
The other thing that occurred to me was the number of kit-built models. With the popularity of almost-ready-to-fly planes, there was criticism in years past that the event "wasn't what it used to be," because nobody built kits anymore. There was a not-so subtle message being sent that the competition was really just for the true builders among us, and that segment of the club was dwindling. Now there were four beautiful ARFs competing in their own category, but I was pleased to see that there were almost three times that number of kit-built models or those built from plans. And it wasn't just limited to the experienced builders either, as one entry was a very nicely finished 40-sized trainer built by a new member who is just getting into the hobby.
...
These thoughts aside, Winter Project Night is still a competition, and I was honored to be able to award first-place trophies to the efforts of several members in the categories of scale, sport, ARF and Best-of-Show. The second- and third-place certificates will be distributed at the next meeting. I think everyone had a good time and those in attendance left with a little more than they came in with that evening. Namely, the experience of sharing this wonderful hobby with other like-minded individuals. .

Keep up your airspeed!

Jim McCoy

If you see Bill Costello at the field, be sure to ask him to do a sound check of your aircraft. It's a simple and quick process that will help to secure us AMA Gold Leader Club status.

BASIC FLYING RULES

Try to stay in the middle of the air, and do not go near the edges. The edges of the air can be recognized by the appearance of buildings, water, trees and interstellar space. It is much more difficult to fly there.

Club Meeting
April 25, 2007

Jim McCoy brought the meeting to order. A motion to accept the March secretary's report as stated in the April 2007 Yankee Flyer was made and seconded. The motion passed unanimously. The current membership count stands at 52.
... The treasurer's report was given by Dave Seale. A summary follows: Ending Balance: $3,361.77 Income: $190.00 Expense: $12.95 A motion to accept the treasurer's report was made and seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
... The access road into the Medfield flying field is currently flooded due to the rain from the prior week. Hopefully, the road will be passable in a week or so. The field itself is in great shape. There has been some vandalism committed to the frequency board. It has been replaced with an old board from the Millis field.
... Some time was spent discussing what course of action the club should take against rogue visitors to the flying field. I will be contacting our site supervisor for advice and/or direction.
... Bill Costello announced two events for the upcoming fun fly scheduled for June 23rd. The first is a multi-touch and go in one pass of the field. The second is flying between two vertical poles. I believe the poles will be setup on the runway and parallel to it. If you have any questions on these events or if you would like to volunteer to help during the fun fly please contact Bill.
... Bill Costello gave an update on the engine noise awareness program. He will officially start screening planes Saturday April 28th. He also said he would try to occasionally get to the field on Sundays. It is not required that club members submit their planes for testing. This is only an awareness program.
... The meeting was adjourned and followed by the Winter Projects Night display and contest.

Regards,
Roger Gilman
MMAC Secretary

Other than some persistent puddles left behind from the high river level, access into the field is now quite passable. We're still hoping to make repairs to the road once the water completely recedes. Some minor instances of vandalism have occurred, but for the most part our facilities are pretty much as we left them in the fall.
... The field itself has been mowed a couple of times and is in great shape. Our crackerjack team of groundskeepers have already been on the job...fertilizing the runway and pilot stations on May 8. We'll be rolling and seeding as soon as we can.
... A few instances of radio interference have been reported, however it is random and the causes are inconclusive. Please be sure to report any frequency issues to a board member as soon as you can. In addition, I'd like to remind every member to strictly adhere to the established frequency pin system as that's our best defense against accidental shoot-downs. It's also really helpful to use the antenna mounted frequency numbers that come with your radio to identify the channel you're utilizing. Good communication and cooperation is extremely important.
... Bill Costello has started his voluntary engine noise level monitoring. This program is meant to establish a baseline for our models and to fulfill a missing component for our application to AMA Gold Club status. Of the several planes sampled thus far, everyone is well within the recommended 96db range.

Bill Costello and his Phaeton.
Roger Gilman readies a recently completed trainer for new member Charlie Anamateros.

... Several Winter Project aircraft have made their Bill Martin Airfield debut over the past couple of weeks. Bill Lloyd has flown his SIG Somethin' Extra several times and reports that he's very pleased with it's performance. Dave Seale is working the bugs out of his Great Planes Super Sportster...a clean-looking ship that is his first electric powered aircraft. Bill Costello is still fine-tuning the control throws and engine on his Balsa USA Phaeton...a hefty biplane which took first place honors in the sport category (we're all anxiously waiting to see his Kellett Autogyro make an appearance). Best of Show winner, Dave O'Hanian's electric Liberty Sport biplane made a brief hop last week. Dave is making incidence adjustments to the upper wing before flying his beautiful model.
... New member, Charlie Anamateros, brought his nicely built Great Planes PT-40 for it's first check flight recently. Instructors Bill Lloyd and Roger Gilman both worked with Charlie to make some needed adjustments prior to Roger test flying the model. Although we discovered it was quite tail heavy, Roger landed the plane safely and Charlie will correct the problem before making another flight.

NOTE: MMAC members are encouraged to send photos of their projects to be included in future issues of The Yankee Flyer. Please email them to Jim McCoy at mccoygroup@comcast.net along with a brief description of the plane.

Raffle Winner!
It's unfortunate that we don't have a photo of his face, but MMAC member Mickey Callahan sure looked surprised when his name was called at the last meeting as the winner of the P-47 Raffle. Generously donated by Bob Rice at Hobby USA in Ashland, this beautiful 60-sized Hangar 9 ARF will fly quite nicely with the Futaba radio that Mickey won in last fall's raffle drawn at our October banquet.

Winter Project Details

With 14 planes competing and many members attending just to see the aircraft, this year's Winter Project event was very successful.

ARF Category

Bill O'Donnell's nicely finished Hangar 9 Sopwith Camel won first place in the ARF category.

Dave Seale's 48" Great Planes Super Sportster is his first electric.

Mickey Callahan brought several planes...this Multiplex Twin Star II was awarded third place in the category. Mickey made several modifications to this 56" span model including using out-runner brushless motors in place of Speed 400 units that came with the kit, installation of main landing gear and a stearable nose gear.
Mickey's second entry in the ARF category was this very clean 36" electric Fokker D.VII from Great Planes. Mickey took second place with this entry.

Sport Plane Category

Charlie Anamateros is a new member that is just starting to train. This Great Planes PT-40 is his first kit-built model in quite a long time. Nice Job!

Dave Seale's Dynaflite Butterfly Trainer was the third place winner in the sport category. Designed for a .15 engine, Dave installed a OS25LA to have a little extra power. This 99" span model is covered in transparent yellow and red Monokote.

Jack Squier spent the winter months building this SIG Astro Hog.

Dave Seale's third entry was this sharp-looking Playboy Junior.

Bill Lloyd won second place in the sport category with this 51" Sig Somethin' Extra with a Saito .56 four-stroke. Bill has flown it many times since the event and he says he loves it.

It was good to see longtime member Tom Howland back at a meeting. This time he brought along his Laser 3D model to display.

Our second Playboy Junior of the evening belonged to Mickey Callahan. This one is an electric conversion of the classic glow-powered old-timer.
On the larger side was this Balsa USA Phaeton brought by Bill Costello. It won first place in the sport plane category.

Scale Category

The most unusual model of the evening was this Kellett Autogyro brought by Bill Costello. It was not only a crowd-pleaser, but it also won first place in the scale category.

Dave O'Hanian won Best of Show with his beautifully -finished electric-powered Liberty Sport biplane.

Is this guy compensating for something?

At a 22-foot wingspan and roughly $1500 for each of the eight turbines, this monster might be a bit oversized for Bill Martin Airfield. Click on the link below to check out the movie.
