Bill Martin Entrance Road
Now in Great Shape!
Those of us that have been to Bill Martin Airfield this year have
undoubtedly noted the damage to the road caused by the Charles River
flooding the past couple of springs. The ruts and washouts made
driving into the property an adventure most of the time. Plus, the
encroaching bushes and tree limbs were starting to make the path
resemble something out of Grimm's Fairy Tales.
...
Well, all that has
changed thanks to some planning and hard work done by several members
of the Charles River Radio Controllers. On Friday, August 3, Jon
Leehey and Bob "Bobcat" Scott spent the better part of
a day smoothing out the crown on the road and spreading 60 tons
of gravel to fill and level the surface. While the bobcat was used
to do the heavy lifting, Jon clipped and cut back limbs and branches
all along the way. MMAC member Bill Costello was on hand to offer
some help and direction as well as supply much needed drinking water
as it was a very hot and dirty project.
...
Be sure to thank Jon
and Bob if you see them. At the very least, send them a mental
thank you every time you drive into the property.
Other News...
The South Shore Radio Control Club held their annual Great New
England Scale Fly-In this past August 12 at their expansive
field in Bridgewater, MA. MMAC members Bill O'Donnell, Roger Gilman,
Dave Seal and Scott Annis all drove down to enjoy the event. Bob
Rice from Hobby USA in Ashland also attended and spent part of the
day sharing MMAC's shade umbrella.
...
Dave reported the
day, "Was a big success with perfect weather, a large crowd
and a nice variety of models. The food was especially good. Programs
were handed out to everyone and the running of the event appeared
to be well done."
...
John Glenzellis put
on an excellent flight demonstration at half-time and Mitch Epstien's
B-17 contest flight was memorable with low passes over the field
with one wheel down and one engine trailing smoke.
...
Scott Annis flew his
newly acquired 1/4-scale Fokker D-VII. Scott actually won the plane
in a raffle at this year's Warbirds Over Delaware event held
several weeks ago. He hopes to fine tune the model in preparation
for the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome Jamboree held in early September.
