Autumn is Here Once Again!

Autumn in New England
can feel like a very short season, but it's one of my favorite times of the year. Sure...we get that whole foliage thing. Then there's pumpkin and apple picking, football games and the World Series. The kids are back in school, so we settle into some semblance of a schedule again. All of this is great, but for me the best part of the fall is the air.
...
Imagine a day in late September or early October when the air is cool and dry, but the sun feels comfortable and warm on your face. The sky is that rich china-blue and there's only a few high, wispy clouds for contrast. The wind is light and more-or-less down the runway and the leaves have begun to turn, but are not quite at their peak. Our models perform better on days like these as the summer's humidity has disappeared with the flipping of the calendar pages. Our wings produce more lift and engines like the increased oxygen that's available. Also, I think WE perform better as we're not constantly wiping the sweat from our face or huddling under a lone beach umbrella for shade. We have the benefit of several months of flight practice to build on, so some of us actually look like we know what we're doing!
... Another advantage to this time of year is the club events we have planned.
... Our fourth annual Demonstration Day at Plains Park in Milford is just around the pylon on Sunday, October 7. Last year, we had a day exactly like I described above...and it couldn't have been more perfect! We've received support again from both the local radio station and newspaper, so having an audience shouldn't be a problem. We will have food, flight demos, instruction and perhaps a surprise or two. Combine this with a wonderful flying site for all of us to enjoy for the day, what's not to love?! Please check the "Events" link on the club website for details and directions, and be sure to attend. With or without a plane, it's a great way to spend a fine autumn day!
...
The MMAC Annual Banquet marks the end of October. This year, it's scheduled for Sunday evening, October 28th at the Coachmen's Lodge in Bellingham, MA. Registration forms were sent to all club members recently, so keep an eye on your mailbox for your invitation and be sure to complete and return it promptly to assure a spot for you and your family. The 2006 banquet was a lot of fun and this year's should be no exception.
...
So...let's all get out there and take advantage of some of the best days of the 2007 flying season!

Keep up your airspeed!
Jim McCoy

The treasurer's report was given by Dave Seale. A summary follows: Ending Balance: $3,395.38, Income: $100.00, Expense: $698.55. A motion to accept the treasurer's report was made and seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
... The Medfield flying field access road work organized by CRRC has been completed. A great job was done leveling and filling in the holes. A big thanks goes to those from the CRRC that did the work.

Dave Seale accepts his fun fly
"Tree Topper" award from
Bill Lloyd, event CD.

... The August fun fly was held on the 25th. Bill Lloyd was CD and assisted by both Bill Costello and Bill O'Donnell. There were 12 pilots who participated in this fun fly. Bill Lloyd read a report which you will find in its entirety in the September Yankee Flyer. Bill Lloyd also presented Dave Seale with a special "Tree Topper Award" (you will have to ask Dave to explain that one). Big thanks go to Bill, Bill and Bill for a job well done.
... Jim McCoy announced that Bill O'Donnell is now a certified AMA CD. Congratulations Bill.
... Upcoming events: Milford Demonstration Day - October 7, Annual Banquet - October 28. Jim McCoy will be sending out flyers via snail mail for the Annual Banquet.
... September is the month for club officer nominations. All nominees must give acceptance to the current President prior to the September meeting. Both the President and Vice President will not be able to run for the same office again next year. Their terms are limited to two years by the club constitution. If you know of someone who is interested in a club officer position please submit a nomination to Jim McCoy.

August Fun Fly Report

Bill Lloyd, CD

The second Fun Fly of the year was held on Saturday, August 25th. Unlike the June Fun Fly, it wasn't very windy, but it was HOT! Bill Costello and I designed the event so that any type of model could compete. The idea must have worked because we had planes ranging from a hand-launched three-channel model to a quarter-scale Taylorcraft!
... The object of the competition was to predict how long it would take you to take off, complete two maneuvers and then land. The score would be determined from the difference between the predicted time and the actual time. Three rounds were flown with the lowest total score used to determine order of finish. We had 12 pilots entered with only one needing to withdraw (due to radio problems). No crashes were encountered, although Bill Costello had a hard landing with the club trainer that required some repair to the model. John Holcomb did the repair and the plane continued. Thanks, John.

Order of finish (starting with first place):
John Holcomb
Mickey Callahan
Bill Lloyd
Brad Kaye
Roger Gilman
Bill Costello
Diego Souza
John Markinac & Dave Seale (tied)
Ted Zaborski
Al Sutton
Charlie Neville

My thanks go to Bill O'Donnell for handling the registration and scoring and Ted Zaborski for posting it on the big board. A big thanks to Dave Seale for providing the much-needed shade. We all had a good time, and I am sure we will repeat this event in the future.

September Means Rhinebeck!

By Jim McCoy

For several of us in MMAC, early September means an annual pilgrimage to the upper Hudson River Valley of New York State to a little hamlet named Rhinebeck. This is the home of Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, Cole Palen's living museum of full-scale World War One and Golden Age aircraft. Each year, the Mid-Hudson Radio Control Club organizes a grand fun-fly of model aircraft representing the same eras as the aerodrome. Called the Rhinebeck Jamboree, this event has been taking place for over 40 years and draws scale enthusiasts from all over the northeast and beyond.
... This September 8-9 was no exception, as Scott Annis, Brad Kaye, Bill O'Donnell, Bud Joline, Roger Gilman and myself all made the trip. Scott, Brad, Bill and I brought planes to fly, but this weekend was rather windy so my 40-sized Cub stayed on the ground. Brad flew Bill O'Donnell's little Eindecker and Scott got several flights with his DeHavilland Tiger Moth and his relatively new Fokker D7.
... In addition to being a bit breezy, the weather on Saturday was quite changeable as rain showers in the early afternoon delayed the full-scale air show a bit. We waited it out and were rewarded by seeing a fantastic presentation of everything from a replica French Caudron and rebuilt Bleriot to a Fokker DR1 Triplane, Fleet Biplane, DeHavilland Tiger Moth and Great Lakes Speedster. I think my personal favorite was the beautifully restored Curtis Jenny. Of course, no matter how many times you make the trip, the show's highlight is always Stan Segalla's "Flying Farmer" routine. Mr. Segalla performs stunts with his stock Piper Cub that just have to bee seen to be believed.
... Roger, Bud and myself made the trip in one day, but Bill, Brad and Scott made a weekend of it by staying in a local hotel. Either way, it's definitely worth the effort, so mark your calendars for next year...it's always scheduled for the weekend following Labor Day.

Hundreds of models of all sizes and configuration were represented along the flightline.
Being a registered pilot gives you the opportunity to get up-close and personal with some of the most beautiful workmanship.
There were several husband and wife teams...so it's definitely not just a guy's event!
Tommy Sopwith would have been proud!
MMAC member, Scott Annis prepares his Fokker D7 for its first sortie of the day.
Scott Annis and Brad Kaye tote Scott's Tiger Moth to the pilot station for a flight. Brad poses with Bill O'Donnell after flying Bill's neat little Eindecker.
This definitely isn't a Williams Brother's dummy engine...and it sounded even better than it looks!
