Multi-Club Fly-In 6/1

Club Fun-Fly 6/21

Flying season has finally arrived! I can’t say enough about the great turnout we had for clean-up day at Bill Martin Airfield. There were a total of 22 workers under the watchful eye of Charlie Neville, who had his whistle blowing as soon as anyone stopped. Thanks guys, for a wonderful team effort!
... Winter Projects Night created some real hard decisions to make in voting with such great models presented. Congratulations to the winners, but with this competition there were no losers. I’m sure we are all looking forward to the winner of the Super Chipmunk getting this aircraft flying.
... Secretary Roger has informed me that Paramount Pictures (who are currently filming a movie at Medfield State Hospital) have been in contact with him. Due to the engine noise, they have asked if we could not fly when they are filming. They will have a person posted at the field in direct contact with the filming crew via walkie-talkie when the filming is taking place. It is in our best interest to cooperate with them. This restriction does not apply to electric planes.
... Our Multi-Club Fly-In is still on for Sunday, June 1 at the SSRCC field in Bridgewater.  Try to make it if possible to have some fun and meet new friends!

Height is your friend...

Bill O'Donnell
2008 MMAC President

NOTE:
There has been an increase in the amount of trash left at the field lately. The bucket is intended for small, hobby-related items only. Fast food containers fill up the bucket quickly and attract our animal friends. Please take your trash home with you as much as possible...and remind other to do the same.

Winter Project Night 2008!

A record number of models over-flowed the tables at the Millis American Legion Hall as the voting began at the 2008 MMAC Winter Project Night that took place at our April meeting. Sixteen aircraft of all shapes and sizes were on display in the three categories of Scale, Sport and Almost Ready to Fly (ARF). Although it's a competition, many members brought their new ships simply for the chance to show off what they've been working on...which was very cool!

Sport Plane Category

Hannibal Dave Seale landed first place in the Sport Plane category with his Hannibal. Built from a Flair kit, this MonoKote-covered beauty is powered with a Saito 150 and got everyone's attention with it's gleaming aluminum cowl and 90" wingspan!
HogBipe Yours-truly finally completed his SIG Hog Bipe just in time for the event. I opted to experiment a bit and covered the plane with scale Stits fabric and Poly-Tone paints. It's powered with the OS .91 four stroke rescued from my ill-fated Tiger Moth.
Sport40 Here's a classic John Holcomb bird...his Sport Air 40. The windows are blacked-out so the poor pilot can't see the horizon while John jitter-bugs about the sky!

ARF Category

B25 Becoming known in the club as "MIster Twin Engine," Ted Zaborski snared first place in the ARF Category with this beautiful Top Flight B-25. He noted that the maiden will most-likely be at Bridgewater to allow for plenty of maneuvering room.
P40 Who could mistake the tell-tale shark snarl of a classic Curtis P-40 Warhawk. Club president, Bill O'Donnell brought this model.
Corsair Bill Lloyd won this Kyosho Corsair F4U .40 at the 2007 Demonstration Day at Plains Park in Milford. He powered it with an OS .52 4-stroke.
Glastar New member Mike Hurd displayed this nice Glasair ARF.
Nextstar Another new member, Frank Krzciuk, showed off his recently completed Hobbico NextStar 46 trainer. We wish him luck re-learning to fly this spring!
Gemini Bud Joline displayed this neat-looking Gemini electric ARF biplane.
JumpinJack Billy Costello (Bill's grandson) brought this snappy Jumpin' Jack Flash electric sport ARF. It even looks fast!
Taylorcraft This Hangar 9 Taylorcraft 450 E-Flite was the handiwork of member Mickey Callahan. I'm sure it flies as good as it looks!
Twist John Holcomb's second Winter Project entry was this very clean Hangar 9 Twist 3D 40 ARF. Dave O'Hanian's son was particularly interested in the little bear pilot.

Scale Category

MewGull Dave O'Hanian has a knack for selecting unusual projects and completing them with impeccable finish and detail. This year's entry was this beautiful Percival Mew Gull...a replica of the famous English racing aircraft. Dave's effort rewarded him with a first place in the Scale Category.
Storch Another MMAC member that likes unusual and challenging scale projects is Bill Costello. His model of the German WWII Fleischer Storch reconnaissance aircraft was patterned after the full-scale plane on display at the Collings Foundation.
Smith Bill Costello also brought this scale Smith Miniplane bipe.

FoulkWulf

MMAC vice president Brad Kaye and club member Scott Annis are all smiles as Scott accepts the 2008 Winter Project "Best-of-Show" trophy for his incredible Focke-Wulf Fw 190 WWII German fighter aircraft. Scott has been working for quite a while to complete this huge model. A Dave Platt design, the aircraft has an 80” wingspan with an AirHobbies 3.0 twin engine sporting a Solo ground-adjustable prop and Sierra retracts. Scott thinks it will end up at about 23 pounds when totally complete. "I was fortunate enough to pull second place post WWI scale at the WRAM show this year with it." Scott noted. "Still lots to do...there always is...but I want to add the nomenclature and do some weathering."

Congratulations, Scott!

cub

Ain't She Pretty!

It's been said that the only thing nicer-looking than a Cub is a Cub on floats! MMAC members Bill O'Donnell and Brad Kaye hiked out to to Sturbridge this past weekend to attend the annual Streeter Beach Spring Float Fly sponsored by the Sturbridge Lawn Darts. Bill installed floats on his Cub a while ago and he has been itching to see it in the air. Brad (who had never flown off the water before) was given the chief pilot job on this very windy and choppy day. The bird flew great and Brad received a round of applause for his skill.

Our Photo of the Month for May is actually a YouTube video link provided by MMAC member Ted Zaborski. It's been the topic of a lot of discussion in the Peanut Gallery at Bill Martin lately. Some thought the guy was lucky...Bill Lloyd thought it was all skill...I think it was a little of both. Just click on the link below and decide for yourself!

Thanks to Ted for this month's photo...I mean video! Remember that MMAC members may submit their nominations to mccoygroup@comcast.net.
