Great Days for Flying!

I would like to thank Bill Costello for one of the best attended Fun Fly in recent history, held at Bill Martin Airfield on June 21st. Bill did a great job with the contests and fun was had by all participants without any serious aerial mishaps.
... Roger has informed me that he has contacted the state regarding the building of a shelter at Bill Martin Airfield. They have requested a site plan to show the proposed location and a plan of the structure. I will provide this to Roger in the near future to forward on to the proper authorities.
... We are still planning on having an airplane raffle to raise money for the proposed shelter. If we do not get the approval the money raised will be put into the club treasury.
... The field appears to be in good shape. Thanks to everyone that is making this possible. Also, please remind members to take any trash back to where it came from.
... See you all at the next meeting on July 29th at the field, weather permitting.

Remember, height is your friend...

Bill O'Donnell
2008 MMAC President

NOTE:
Don't forget that the July 29 club meeting is scheduled at Bill Martin Airfield. Come as early in the day as you can and plan on bringing a plane. We'll fly until 7PM when we'll have a short business meeting. If the weather does not cooperate, we'll move back to the American Legion as usual.

Although Mother Nature has been a little unpredictable this past week, MMAC members have had lots of excellent flying weather to enjoy recently. We've seen evidence that some folks have been using our location for nighttime drinking parties, but the field itself is in pretty good shape. Please remember to police your own trash when you pack up to leave after a flying session.
... The high grass around the perimeter was recently hayed, so the runway feels like it's about twenty feet longer on either end. I've been packing my electric weed-wacker into my van with my models lately, attacking the high grass along the railroad ties and around the impound and protective fences after I'm done flying. It's thick, tough stuff...so, I'm doing a section at a time. I'd love some help with this chore if anyone's interested.
... Speaking if trimming, Tyler and Roger Gilman
have been hard at work cutting back the brush and overhanging trees along the entrance road over the past couple of weeks. This is hot and strenuous work that will take several weeks to complete, so a big THANK YOU! is well deserved.
... Lifetime member, Tom Howland took a nasty fall in his home recently. He was in the hospital for a while and then transferred to Sunbridge Nursing and Rehab in Milford to be closer to his children and continue his recovery. A few MMAC members have stopped by to visit and he seems in good spirits. I'm sure that he'd love to hear for other guys, so contact me via email and I'll get you his address and such.

pawnee

Ted Zaborski has been having fun pretending to spray the crops recently...flying this handsome Hangar 9 Piper Pawnee 40 ARF. The 80 inch model is powered by a Saito 100 and is equipped with working flaps. Unfortunately for Ted, he snagged the model in the trees at the far right of the field a few weeks back, and it stayed there for a while. Ted recovered it intact, however, and with minor repairs he has it back in operation. Just like the full scale aircraft, Ted loves to fly it low and slow...and I'm sure he's working on adding smoke or some other way to simulate crop-dusting.
... Ted is also fine tuning his B-25 Mitchell twin engine bomber that took first place in the Winter Project ARF category. More on that as he gets closer to his maiden flight.

This photo from last season shows
Tyler Gilman with dad / instructor
Roger Gilman.

Congrats to Tyler Gilman!

For the past season or two, Tyler Gilman has been taking buddy-box instruction from his dad, MMAC secretary Roger Gilman. On June 28, Tyler officially became a soloed pilot while flying Jack Squier's pink and blue Sig Senior Kadet which Roger purchased several years ago.
... Tyler will be entering his second year at UMass Dartmouth this fall. He is studying to be a civil engineer.

Congratulations, Tyler...and best of luck!

Secretary Heading
Club Meeting
June 24, 2008

The meeting was brought to order by club president Bill O’Donnell. The meeting was held at the flying field in Medfield.
... A motion to accept the May secretary’s report as stated in the June 2008 Yankee Flyer was made and seconded. The motion passed unanimously. Dave Seale gave the treasure’s report.

Income $227.49... Expense $112.95... Balance 2617.53

A motion to accept the treasurer’s report was made and seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
... Dave Seale mentioned that he has a chair that was left behind by someone at the flying field. Contact Dave directly if you know whose it is.

The June club meeting was held at the field,
so many members had the chance to fly including Scott Annis with his quarter-scale Fokker D7.

... The fun fly held on June 21st was a great success. There were two events with nine pilots participating. Bill Lloyd took first place honors, with yours truly taking second and John Holcomb taking third. A big thanks goes to Bill Costello and Bill O’Donnell for setting up and running the event.
... Bill O’Donnell has proposed that the club explore building a shade shelter at the flying field in Medfield. The location and size were discussed. Bill will draw up a site plan and shelter plan for review. The state site coordinator will be contacted to determine what is required for permission to build a structure. There will be more discussion at the next general meeting.
... The bushes along both sides of flying field access road need to be trimmed back. A motion to spend up to $600 to have the bushes cut was passed. Dave Seale has asked our lawn mower to quote the job. I will ask CRRC if they are willing to split the cost.
... Bill O’Donnell wants to again remind club members that trash at the flying field is everyone’s responsibility. Please take your trash home with you.
... The next meeting is July 29, 2008 at 7PM and it will be held again at Bill Martin Airfield in Medfield. Come early to fly prior to the meeting. If the weather doesn't’ behave the meeting will be held in Millis at the American Legion Hall.

Regards,
Roger Gilman
MMAC Secretary

Photo of the Month

cub

This is a photo and a story from last year, but club president, Bill O'Donnell felt strongly that it was worthy of another look. You see, this unfortunate Piper Cub was piloted by a gentleman named Charlie Bueno at Plains Park in Milford last summer. Charlie flew a little too close to the facility sign at the far right of the property, hitting the wooden post so precisely (and hard) that the spinner nut actually stuck into the pole and held the plane like a dart.
... What makes this story relevant again is that Charlie Bueno officially became a MMAC member last week. We hope that he doesn't mind a little good-natured kidding about his piloting skills!

Thanks to Bill O'Donnell (and Charlie) for this month's photo. Remember that MMAC members may submit their nominations to mccoygroup@comcast.net.
