Get out and Fly!

Labor Day is creeping up and flying will be more comfortable. It was a sad moment this month with the passing of Tom Howland. Up until his last day, Tom was planning to start building a German plane. Tom will be missed by all.
... I would like to thank Mike Mauricio for the building of the starter benches and members that helped with the assembly at the field. It was a great effort by Mike and his helpers!
... I have set a date for our second Fun Fly. It will be held Saturday, September 20, 2008. Hope for good weather and we will all have a fun time. Jim McCoy has made up raffle tickets for our next club raffle. The lucky winner will have a choice of two planes. Tickets will be made available from Brad at the meeting on August 26, 2008. As always thank you Jim for another great job! The winning ticket will be pulled on October 26, 2008, at our annual banquet.
... I will see you all at the next meeting on August 26, 2008. The meeting will be held at the field, weather permitting.
Remember, height is your friend...
Bill O'Donnell
2008 MMAC President
NOTE:
Don't forget that the August 26 club meeting is once again scheduled at Bill Martin Airfield. Come as early in the day as you can and plan on bringing a plane. We'll fly until 7PM when we'll have a short business meeting. If the weather does not cooperate, we'll move back to the American Legion as usual.

MMAC Says Goodbye to a Friend
 |
Tom Howland, shown here with his
son, last paid a visit to Bill Martin
Airfield in the Spring of 2006.
|
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of longtime MMAC member, Tom Howland, on August 1 at Metrowest Medical Center after being hospitalized for several weeks following a fall.
... Known for his unique building style, Tom could be found at the original Millis field almost every weekend to test-fly some new project. Because of declining health in recent years, Tom was not as active as he wished, but he always kept up on club news via email and our newsletters. He said that he "loved to see what the guys were up too."
... Tom was awarded a MMAC Lifetime Membership in April of 2006.
... Donations can be made in Tom's memory to the Framingham Heart Study, 79 Mount Wayte Avenue, Framingham, MA 01702. |

OK, so the weather has continued to be a little goofy this month, but there have been several great days to flip the prop, point the nose into the wind and head into the wild blue. Our last meeting at Bill Martin was one of those perfect summer evenings...so, here's some photos to prove it!

What a beautiful
evening to fly!
We were treated to some great scale aircraft like Scott Annis' Fokker D7 (above) that was sporting a newly finished camouflage trim scheme, and a maiden flight of a P-51 by Diego Souza. |
 |
Striking a very familiar pose, Bill Lloyd enjoys some stick time early in the evening. |
 |
The sky was not reserved just for scale aircraft. Your's truly had a wonderful time shooting touch-and-gos with a trusty Ultra Stick. |
 |
Brad Kaye came with his trailer packed with several models including this very clean Sukoi. |
 |
Brad put on quite a show with this profile 3D ship. |
 |
MMAC Secretary, Roger Gilman, was proud to award a solo pilot's certificate to his son, Tyler. Roger had the pleasure of training Tyler via the buddy-box for the past season and a half.
We took a break from flying about 7:00 to conduct the club's business meeting (below). Very informal and short enough that several of us got in another flight or two. |

All in all, it was an excellent evening to catch up with other club members, get in some flights and do a little club business. Our next meeting on August 26 is once-again scheduled at Bill Martin Airfield, so be sure to put you model on charge and head on over on Tuesday afternoon!

New Starter Benches!
This past spring, MMAC member Mike Mauricio volunteered to pre-cut kits for two additional starter benches like the “Jack’s Rack” bench that has been in use for the past several seasons.
... A construction crew consisting of Mike Mauricio, Charlie Anamateros, Scott Annis, John Holcomb, Bill Costello and Dave Seale assembled the two new benches on Sunday, August 17. With all that help (and the excellent prep work done by Mike), the assembly was completed in about a hour-and-a half and the benches were put to use right away.
... Special thanks go to Mike for his time and efforts on our behalf as well as the guys that arrived bright and early that Sunday morning to help out.

Photo of the Month

Although I did receive Photo of the Month nominations from several members (thank you), I chose this month's selection myself after coming across the website while doing some research on another project. It's another video clip, this time showing a Votec 322b in aerobatic flight over Switzerland with 4 different onboard views shot with small wireless cameras.
To view the video, just click on the photo or this text here.
What caught my eye was how the video captured the aircraft, pilot and surroundings in a very life-like manner. Looking similar to an Edge, the plane is one of three custom-designed homebuilts used for the Swiss aerobatic team in 2006. With a little imagination, the plane looks almost like one of our models. The pilot provides some entertainment as well...
Remember that MMAC members may submit their nominations to mccoygroup@comcast.net.
