Autumn Already?

With Fall fast approaching, we will be putting skis on our planes before you know it! MMAC was well represented again at the Rhinebeck Jamboree weekend on September 6-7. Although the

Rhinebeck was a family affair this year as Brad Kaye's daughter, Jade (left) and Bill O'Donnell's granddaughter, Megan (right) kept each other company for the weekend. Not pictured is Heather Annis (Scott’s daughter) who has come with her dad for several seasons now.

Those lucky enough to stay a little late on Sunday were treated to a impromptu demonstration by the Iron Eagles aerobatic team. One of the pilots is the son of Stan Segalla, Rhinebeck Aerodrome' s famous "Flying Farmer."

weather forecast was not good, Saturday was merely overcast and Sunday was perfect. Brad Kaye, Scott Annis and I made it through two days of flying without any plane casualties (I did not fly). We were accompanied by Jade (Brad’s daughter), Heather (Scott’s daughter) and Megan (my granddaughter).
... Our Fun Fly on Saturday, September 20 was great. We had nine pilots competing in two events created by Bill Costello. Great job, Bill and the competition was close.  Congratulations to 12-year-old Sean Berardi, our youngest contestant, who did a fine job.
... Roger has informed me that we have the approval from our state site manager to build the field shelter as proposed. With the sales of the pilot raffle tickets, we should be able to start construction in early spring if not sooner.
... Our 5th annual Demo Day is on schedule for October 12. The field, food, radio station and sound system are all secured. All we need are the Weather Gods to be good to us and we will have a great turnout as in past years. Please try to attend as we’d like the club to be well represented with both planes and pilots. If you can’t fly or stay very long…come anyway as it’s a lot of fun even as a spectator.
... The 2008 MMAC Family Banquet invitations have recently been sent to all active members. This event is always a great opportunity for members to introduce their wives and families to the club and it’s activities…plus it’s a great meal! Please send your registration forms with payment as soon as possible.
... Our next meeting will be held at the American Legion on Tuesday, September 30 at 7:30PM. Members interested in becoming a club officer should make their intentions known at the meeting.

Remember, height is your friend...

Two Members Earn Their Wings

tom

New member, Steve Rivet of Bellingham, soloed on September 13.

Most of us can vividly remember the day we soloed...that feeling of nervous anticipation as we walked out to the pilot station alone followed by a mix of relief and pride as we walked back to the pits with the model in the same condition as when we started.
... Two new members recently had the very same experience as Steve Rivet of Bellingham soloed on Saturday, September 13 and on Sunday, September 21, Don Schipani of Norfolk earned his RC wings.
... Kudos go to Steve's Instructor Roger Gilman and to John Holcomb who worked with Don over the summer. With Tyler Gilman becoming a soloed pilot in June, the MMAC graduating class of 2008 now stands at three members.
... Congratulations and happy landings go to students and instructors...great job!

The energy around Bill Martin Field has been buzzing lately...and not just with the sound of mosquitoes! With the August club meeting held at the field and the fun fly on September 20, things have been pretty busy lately.

August Club Meeting

Having a field meeting (above) is a nice change of pace to the more formal gathering at the American Legion. There's the usual social time...but everyone has an opportunity to get in a few flights before the short business meeting.

Franklin Dickie (left) had some well-earned vacation time this particular week, so he took advantage of the club meeting as a chance to fly during the week.

September 20 Fun Fly

The nerve center for the day (above) was expertly manned by scorekeeper and event CD Bill O'Donnell. The tension of the day's vicious competition is clearly visible on everyone's face.

Bill Lloyd (left) adds a flight score to the tote board.

There were a total of nine pilots who participated in the fun-fly. Bill Lloyd came in first place, with Dave Seale and Bill Costello tied for second. Brad Kaye landed in third place.

lloyd Bill Costello heads out to the flightline for another go at it. Bill worked with Bill O'Donnell to organize the day's events.
stick Our youngest member, 12-year-old Sean Berardi of Milford, did very well with his e-powered Hobbyzone Super Cub.

Secretary Heading
Club Meeting
August 26, 2008

The meeting was brought to order by club president Bill O’Donnell.  The meeting was held, for the last time this year, at the flying field in Medfield. It turned out to be another great evening for flying and the turnout was excellent. About 20 members showed up to fly and attend the meeting.
... Bill O’Donnell asked for a moment of silence in memory of Tom Howland who passed away on August 1 at the age of 94. Tom was a long-time club member and avid model builder right up to the end. We will miss you Tom. In Tom’s name the club made a donation to the Framingham Heart Study Fund in the amount of $100.
... A motion to accept the July secretary’s report as stated in the August 2008 Yankee Flyer was made and seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
Dave Seale gave the treasure’s report.
            Income $180.00            Expense $263.49
            Checking $2731.88       CD account $2015.12
A motion to accept the treasurer’s report was made and seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
... Bill O’Donnell is still working on the plans for the shade shelter. He will also provide a cost estimate when he presents his plans.
... Bill thanked Mike Mauricio for making the two new pilots benches and all those that helped to assemble them at the field on Saturday August 16. Mike, the benches look great.
... The new plane raffle was announced. This is a pilot’s choice raffle with the winner having the choice of either a Hanger 9 Show Time 4D 90 ARF or Hobbistar 60 Mark 3 ARF. The tickets are $3 each or $5 for three. Contact club V.P. Brad Kaye if you would like to purchase a chance or two. A big thanks goes to Jim McCoy for making the tickets.
... A fun fly has been scheduled for September 20. Bill O’Donnell and Bill Costello are organizing it. The events have not been announced yet.
... October 12th is the date for the Milford Demo Day event this year.  Reserve the date on your calendar.
... The next meeting is September 30, 2008 @ 7:30PM. We will be meeting in Millis at the American Legion Hall.

Roger Gilman
MMAC Secretary

Photo of the Month

This month we have another video clip that I found while wasting time...I mean researching...what's available on the Internet for interesting images for the Yankee Flyer. Many of us have seen the video of the ill-fated monster turbine-powered B-52 bomber. This B-29 looks to be just about the same size, but the ending of the video is far less disastrous. Enjoy...
