With the April showers finally over, great days are here! Thanks again for the great turnout at Winter Project Night. Congratulations to the winners but with the competition we had there were no losers.
... The Pilot’s Choice Raffle is over with Gary Legee (a helicopter pilot) being the lucky winner. I have seen Gary fly his helicopter, and I am sure he will be just as competent with this new plane. Thank you to all who helped and supported the raffle, which was a great success.
... I am planning to have a sketch of our proposed shelter for our May meeting to be held at Bill Martin Field. At this time any ideas and suggestions for the size and location of the shelter can be discussed.
... Just a reminder that our Co-Club Invitational Fly-In with The Quinapoxet Club is still on at their Holden Field on Sunday, May 17 (see our club calendar at the end of this newsletter for a link to their website and directions). I hope to see as many MMAC members as possible at this event.

Remember, height is your friend...

Bill O'Donnell
2009 MMAC President

REMINDER: The May 26 club meeting is at Bill Martin Airfield. Come early and bring a plane to fly prior to our short business meeting at 7PM. The gate will be open for the meeting. In case of inclement weather, we'll lock the gate closed as a signal that we've moved the meeting back to the American Legion..

Winter Project Night 2009!

With 14 competing aircraft as well as a quarter-scale Fokker DR1 Triplane and a glow-powered RC car as show-and-tell...MMAC members had a lot to look at during our annual Winter Project Night at the April 28 club meeting. Models just about filled the tables at the Millis American Legion Hall as the voting began. Aircraft of all shapes and sizes were on display in the three categories of Scale, Sport and Almost Ready to Fly (ARF).

Sport Plane Category

Hannibal Dave Seale landed first place in the Sport Plane category with his Golden Oldie...a Fred Reese biplane design that looks like a cross between a Jenny and a Gypsy Moth. Dave even included a set of kit-made floats for the model!
HogBipe Steve Rivet completed his Goldberg Tiger 60 just in time for the event. Quite a patriotic color scheme don't you think?!
Sport40 One of three entries by Franklin Dickie, this very clean Great Planes PT40 looks anxious to fly!

ARF Category

B25 An avid sportsman, Bud Joline has flown in several DeHavilland Beavers over the years. His E-Flite DHC-2 received the first-place trophy in the ARF category. Congratulations, Bud!
P40 With its distinctive invasions stripes and authentic camouflage, Mickey Callahan's Kyosho electric Spitfire ARF looks ready to scramble!
Corsair Mickey Callahan's other entry is a step back into the world of glow power for him...a Great Planes Escapade .40-sized ARF.
Glastar A first for Winter Project Night, new member Gary Legee brought a beautiful MD500 glow-powered ARF helicopter from FunKey.
Nextstar Franklin Dickie won this Hobbistar Mark 3 ARF Trainer at our Annual Family Banquet in October.
Gemini Go fast, turn left...MMAC secretary, Roger Gilman is planning to compete in pylon events this summer with this Viper 500 ARF. Good luck, Roger!
gantert New member, Joe Gantert was very proud of his Tower 40 Trainer...and it's easy to see why! Nice job, Joe!

Scale Category

MewGull Franklin Dickie won first place in the scale category with his Great Planes Spitfire kit-build.
Storch Dave O'Hanian has become known for his impeccable finish and detail on all his models. This year's entry was this small and very beautiful Great Lakes Trainer.
Smith Bill Costello likes large and unusual projects, and this year's entry was no exception. A British Westland Lycaster that just fit on the table!

FoulkWulf

MMAC president Bill O'Donnell complained all spring about how difficult this model was to assemble...especially the cowl. His perseverance paid off, however, as Bill has the honor of being the first entrant to win a Winter Project Best of Show trophy with an ARF! His Great Planes Gee Bee R-2 deserved the award, and Bill is looking forward to having his model fly at the Rhinebeck Jamboree this fall.

Congratulations, Bill!

Pilot's Choice Raffle Winner!

Raffle TixThe MMAC 2009 Pilot's Choice Raffle winner was drawn at the April meeting from the 175 tickets sold over the past spring. New member, Gary Legee, was not only the lucky winner, but he was also present to accept the honor and choose his prize. Gary carefully selected the Top Flight P-51 kit generously donated by MMAC member, Scott Annis.
... His other options included a FunKey CAP 232 120 ARF
donated by Joe Candela at Creative Hobbies in Mendon and a Hangar 9 Showtime 4D 90 ARF donated by Bob Rice of Hobby USA in Ashland.
... The Executive Board would like to thank all who participated in the success of the Pilot's Choice Raffle, especially Vice President Brad Kaye, who went above-and-beyond to sell EVERY ticket we printed! Proceeds from this raffle go towards defraying the cost of building our proposed Pilot Shelter at Bill Martin Airfield.

Invitational Fly-In on Sunday, May 17

MMAC has been invited by the Quinapoxet Model Flying Club to participate in a Co-Club Invitational Fly-In on Sunday, May 17 at their relatively new flying field located north of us in Holden, MA. Former MMAC member, Colin Towers, has been involved with the Quinapoxet club after moving to that neck of the woods several years ago. Colin attended two of our club meetings this spring to renew some old friendships and work out the details of this fly-in partnership. This relaxed, noncompetitive event is meant to provide a forum for us to get to know some of our neighboring club members and have an opportunity to fly another site...a great experience if you've never done so.

Directions to the Holden site can be found here or you can contact Colin Towers at 978-779-9860 or email him for additional details.

We plan to reciprocate by hosting the Quinapoxet club at Bill Martin Airfield later this year. Dates and details to be announced soon.

Rockin' & Rollin'

Decent weather and plenty of willing and able volunteers made the Bill Martin Airfield 2009 Spring Clean-Up Day on April 18 a success. As in years past, guys from both MMAC and CRRC pitched-in to make raking, seeding, fertilizing and rolling of the airfield and pit area a manageable and pleasant task.
... Special thanks go to Brad Kaye for transporting the roller on one of his flatbed trucks and to John "Slow Hand" Holcomb for his musical accompaniment.

field_spring09

Members please remember to remove any trash or debris when they leave the airfield at the end of their flying session. Also, it would be great if guys could bring a weed-wacker every now and then to clean up the edges around the pits, pilots stations and impound areas.

hatsClub Logo Stickers & Hats

Don't forget that MMAC offers high quality logo stickers that are perfect to place on your car, flight box, aircraft or spouse. Available in two sizes, the small size (3" x 1.875") is $1 and the large size (4.75" x 3") is $1.50. They can be purchased at club meetings or shipped to you by mail by contacting Jim McCoy at 508-478-6617 or email at mccoygroup@comcast.net.
... We also have a small supply of club hats available once again. Fully-adjustable, they come in a very stylish royal blue with the club logo embroidered on the front. Contact Bill O'Donnell at 508-473-4441 or bill@odonnellelectric.com while supplies last.

Video of the Month

photo

I've always been intrigued by the aircraft designed by the Granville Brothers Brothers of Springfield, MA. The silhouette of the Gee Bee R-1 and R-2 became synonymous with air racing in the 1930s even though many other designs were just as successful in their time. I've never seen a video of a full-scale Gee Bee deign in flight...so Bill O'Donnell's "Best of Show" winner sent me to the You Tube archives to fine this little gem of a reproduction Gee Bee R-2. Yes, it's fast...but aerobatic as well...enjoy!
